The Rise of the Dragon is the first of the short stories written for the New World series. The Rise of the Dragon chronicles the rise, fall, and rebirth of House Targaryan. Spending most of the time in the city of Tree Hill it breaks into the lands of Westros where we get the first glimpse of the land from the eyes of the members of House Targaryan who are fleeing Lucerne for new lands.

Rise of the Dragon first begins in terms of the story during Chapter Four of End of Darkness when Lucas Scott is discussing how Tree Hill has been the constant sight of bloothbaths. Discussing this he mentions the Week of which was the culminating of the end of House Targaryan, and from this we flesh out this beggining. During the main story the current goings on in Dragonstone are only hinted at through rumors of the Targaryans, and then during Westros it is revealed the Rise of Dragonstone after William receives many letters from other kingdoms one of which is from Dragonstone.

The Rise of the Dragon spends a significant time fleshing out the events that culminated in the destruction of House Targaryan in Tree Hill, and the players that were involved in this including the only POV of James Lovie a relatively unknown player in the history of the Kingdom of Lucerne. Following the events of the destruction of House Targaryan it follows the house as it travels eastward and undergoes a series of difficulties before finally settling in the former Dark Elf mountain of Dragonstone. Following this the current events of the Empire of Dragonstone dominate the story, and we see the rise of the Empire of Dragonstone in the region. Following Westros the Rise of the Dragon reengages with Rhaegar, and Deneyres Targaryan leading the massive expansion of Dragonstone into the lands surrounding the city. Attacking first the lands of the west they expand easily but are finally stopped by the Kingdom of Nordling who amasses a large alliance against Dragonstone and forces Rhaegar to leave the south and move to the west alongside much of the southern force. Attempting to besiege the capital of Nordling they fail and are pushed back after Rhaegar has to go south with his force when the Trollocs push north with massive numbers. Rhaegar fights the Trollocs but there numbers defeat him, and only his skill keeps the army from complete defeat

In the Rise of the Dragon the POV characters are James Lovie for brief periods, Rhaegar Targaryan who is the one telling the story of much of what happened, but his story telling is interupted by periods of House Targaryan, House Scott, and House Tyrell members describing the Week, and other events of the story.

Plot Summary

Chapter One

Aryes Targaryan III. is the POV Character of Chapter One, and he deals with the madness of his father as he was a young boy, and he reads the story of the Fall of House Targaryan to his son Rhaegar of whom is just a boy at the time he is reading it to him. During the chapter he also mentions how he knew the young Bill Lovie as a child, and hearing of what his old kings son had become now he is horrified that he didn't see it then.

Chapter Two

Rhaegar Targaryan is the POV Character of Chapter Two, and during this chapter he speaks with his father as Aryres Targaryan III. tells him about how they took Dragonstone, and the chaos they found within the Dark Elven hold. Rhaegar has discussions with his uncle Viserys about the situation they find themselves inside Dragonstone, and this details the area of eastern Westros.

Chapter Three

Deneyres Targaryan is the POV Character of Chapter Three and during this chapter she accompanies her cousin Daena Blackfyre and several of Daena's lady in waiting as her younger cousin is going to the Dragon Palace where she will be undertaking the dragon ritual. Daena Blackfyre attempts to grab the burning egg but the egg burns her and she drops it but before it hits the ground it is caught by her lady in waiting Liala Redwyne causing a Following this she spends time with her brother Rhaegar as he attempts to understand how to work the Dragon's Harp that his father and the other Targaryans had discovered when they were traveling eastward. Eventually over the course of trying he is able to play it, and after nothing happening at first days later a nearly dead dragon lands in Dragonstone, and everyone goes into overdrive trying to keep the dragon alive.

Chapter Four

Yorllian Wind is the POV Character of Chapter Four and during this chapter he details his youth, and through his memory he details the efforts his father went through to rebuild House Wind after the destruction that had gone against it back in Tree Hill. Using his charisma and family wealth he gathers men to him that are loyal to him alone, and he turns them into his own force of whom he mobilizes and leads to the village of Windhaven where he plans to take control of the village and bring it into the fold of Dragonstone. After doing many impressive things to gain popularity and wealth from the village he is shocked during the final part of the chapter when Daven Backstame betrays him and threatens him to leave while also killing one of his friends. After he leaves he is whispered to by Daven's daughter of whom indicates that she is on his side, and that she wants him to win.

The foot that held my head to the ground suddenly went away and looking up I found no sign of Daven just the lifeless form of Vander bleeding out on the floor and Taedor lying unconsious in the corner. I pulled myself and moved towards Taedor to make sure he was alright, but as I moved I was pulled from behind and a hand wrapped itself in front of my mouth. I tried to pull away but a girls voice slowed me.

"Do not worry Yorllian this is not the end for you." The hand around my mouth disapeared and I turned around to see Daven's daughter Ulia staring back at me.

"Your father just murdered my friend. I will have my vengeance."

"Of course. Let me help you drive the sword into his heart."

"You barely know me."

"All the more reason to not trust eachother."

"I don't need you to trust me Yorllian. I just need you to move against my father, and believe that when the time comes I will deliver him to you."

Chapter Five

Rhaegar Targaryan is the POV Character of Chapter Five and during this chapter he is saying goodbye to his sister Deneyres of whom is going west to see the Kingdom of Lucerne with several other Dragonstone nobles in order to gain their alliance. As she is clearly nervous he tries to calm her by telling his sister Deneyres a story of when he was younger and he traveled west under the alias of a Dragon Knight and retelling this story he reenters Lucerne travelling to the city of Tree Hill where he plans to fight in a tournament there. At the Tree Hill Tournament of 5119 he attempts to win the tournament in order to gain from the Scott's a simple wish from them, and the wish he has is to gain some of his families old things. He is able to do quite well in the tournament and ends up winning due to the determination he has to win the tournament, and towards the end he has interactions with Eddard Starke, and his young sister Lyanna Starke of whom clearly has quite the crush on him and despite her youth he gains quick feelings for her. Following this victory he is given many items of House Targaryan and makes his way eastward again. Following telling her this story they are interupted by Red Wind of whom takes Deneyres by the hand leading her to the boat that will take them to Lucerne and what they all hope will be the rebirth of the alliance with Lucerne.

Chapter Six

Yorllien Wind is the POV Character of Chapter Six and during this chapter he must deal with the betrayal of Daven Backstame. Fighting a siege against his rival he is able to win the fight after the people of Windhaven turn against Daven, and his daughter drives the final nail into his coffin.

Chapter 7

Deneyres Targaryan is the POV Character of Chapter Six and during this chapter she arrives at the Kingdom of Lucerne capital of Lucerne where she and the party let their identities be known and they are brought to see the King of the Kingdom of Lucerne in the form of William Lovie III.

Chapter 8

Rhaegar Targaryan is the POV Character of this chapter and during this chapter he greets the return of his sister Deneyres to the capital and following her reveal of a Magi stone and a major agreement from the Kingdom of Lucerne and their King William Lovie III. to expand their relationship Rhaegar quickly summons the council of Dragonstone to decide their next move.

Chapter 9

Deneyres Targaryan is the POV Character of Chapter 8 and during this chapter she leads the main army of Dragontone alongside her cousin Aegon Targaryan II. in a westward movement to conquer the independants west of Dragonstone. While she gives command of the main army to her cousin Aegon and other relatives with them she leads a smaller force through some of the independent towns and villages as she wants to gain some independance from what she believes she is seen as in the main army. She would arrive in a small village called Tainin where she would plan to stay for a week before she was going to leave again further south into the badlands that seperated the Empire of Dragonstone from the Kingdom of Isengard. It was during this recruitment that she would meet two men that would change everything she thought she knew about life in the form of Jorah Mormont, and Christoph Von Plutter.

Chapter 10

Yorllien Wind is the POV Character of Chapter Nine and during this chapter As part of the deal that got him final victory he marries Ulia Backstrame and the two continue expanding the power of Windhaven when they begin construction of a ring wall around the village. At the end of the chapter he receives word from his father that the Empire of Dragonstone is preparing to expand, and that Windhaven will be one of the sites they do this from due to the great work he has accomplished.

Chapter 11

Rhaegar Targaryan is the POV Character of Chapter Seven and during this chapter he travels southward towards Red Keep where his brother Viserys has taken control of the fortress following his inappropriate behavior towards their sister. Rhaegar would at this point found the port of Dragonpeak of which will be the southern port of Dragonstone after Dragonsport was founded north of Dragonstone by his cousin Junet Targaryan. Rhaegar would send most of his forces to assist his sister Deneyres in assaulting the west, and spent his time meeting with several diplomats from other kingdoms of which the most important one to him was the Lucernians of whom sent several diplomats of which one of the diplomats was the now twenty three year old Lyanna Starke of whom shows her affection for him following the meeting when she corners him in a hallway and the two proceed to kiss. The Lucernian detachment brings with them a Magi stone so that they could communicate with Lucerne, and William himself. Following their discussion of political matters Rhaegar asks William about Lyanna Starke the girl he has loved since their first meeting so many years previously, and William says that he will look into Lyanna Starke.

"May I ask something else of you William?"

"Of course my friend."

"There was a girl I met many years ago. Lyanna Starke. Do you know of her current status?"

"I know she remains unmarried far past what I would say is normal for a girl of her appearance. Perhaps your meeting years ago is the reason for this."

"I hope so William."

Chapter 12

Deneyres Targaryan is the POV Character of Chapter Eleven and during this chapter she arrives just east of Orell but is waylaid by a mercenary force called the Twins of Penti led by twin noblemen from Pontus of whom are trying to delay Deneyres in order for a larger force of mercenaries to arrive from Pontus. At the end of the chapter she reaches the capital of Orell and meets with one of the Ollen children and after he insults her family she breaks rules of engagement and holds him as a prisoner.

Chapter 13

Rhaegar Targaryan is the POV Character of this chapter and during this chapter hears the first of the reports detailing the rising number of Trolloc, and Orcs coming from the south, and he moves southward as he needs to now determine a course of action. Arriving at the Red Keep he is alerted that the Orcs, and Trolloc are making their way in extreme numbers towards Red Keep, and he summons two more dragons in the form of the Riders to him in order to prepare an ambush for the opponents when they arrive. He receives word that his sister Deneyres is having a lot of trouble in the west, and to top things off he receives word that Dragonsport is under threat from allies of Pontus of whom do not like the rise of Dragonstone.

Chapter 14

Deneyres Targaryan is the POV Character of this chapter and during this chapter she is holding the Ollen hostage, and is dealing with the consequences of breaking this tradition, and despite attempting to fix things the Ollen's are deeply offended and want him released immediatly. Seeing that battle is going to happen no matter what she does she doesn't release the prisoner, and during a council the night before battle Jorah Mormont tells her that he has a plan to turn one of the largest powers in Orell to their side. Agreeing to the plot she sends him alongside Daena Blackfyre, and Christopher Plutter of whom are to infiltrate the city and find this noblemen and turn him to their side therefore winning the battle the next day.

Chapter 15

Yorllian Wind is the POV Character of this chapter and during this chapter Yorllien leaves Windhaven in the command of his second in command while travelling with Ulia Backstrame northward towards Dragon's Port where Rhaegar has commanded him in a letter to deal with the growing situation north of the town. On the road to Dragon's Port he and Ulia sleep together several times and he begins to truly fall in love with her, believing that she actually cares for him, and it is in this happy way they enter Dragon's Port where they are met at the gates by Junet Targaryan, and Kursten North of which leads to the group touring the city of which is a marvel of what the future of the Empire of Dragonstone could be.

Chapter 16

Rhaegar Targaryan is the POV Character of this chapter and during this chapter he returns to Dragonstone where he speaks with William Lovie III. in order to ask him for advise on moving forward including specifically asking him about the Sindar Elves of High Forest.

Chapter 17

Deneyres Targaryan is the POV Character of this chapter and during this chapter she fights in the Battle of Orell where she rides into battle on her dragon, and alongside the betrayal of House Sordin the Orell forces are completely decimated giving the Targaryans victory. Entering Orell she finds most of the men have fled the city and the remainder of the population is very angry and only controlled by the dragon flying overhead. Moving quickly to gain control of the Kingdom of Orell she summons the Dragon Priests of the Temple of Orell of whom she forces to disolve the Kingdom of Orell, and following this she follows the freedom left to her by her brother when she creates the Dutchy of Orell, and summons House Sordin to the palace where she plans to name Trisha Sordin the new Dutchess of Orell due to the power held by Ophellia Sordin frightening her to giving her more.

Chapter 18

Yorllian Wind is the POV Character of this chapter and during this chapter he arrives in Dragonsport where he meets with Junet Targaryan, Daemon Blackfyre, and Kursten North of whom tell him that the situation has deterioted since he was sent to Dragonsport and looking out across the river with a spyglass they see the army of Pontus which has arrived in order to threaten them. Junet has been threatening them away with the threat of Dragons and this has worked until recently the Pontus forces celebrated the arrival of several Magi of whom they believe can counter the Dragons and realizing he cant risk the Dragons he works alongside Junet to plan a new means of attack against the Pontus army.

Chapter 19

Rhaegar Targaryan is the POV Character of this chapter and during this chapter he watches as the beggining of the Orcish and Trolloc force arrives at the outskirts of the Red Keep and realizing he needs more help he plans gathering more forces to his side. In order to gather these forces Rhaegar sends his cousin Daemon Blackfyre north where he is to link up with the forces at Dragon's Port and work with these forces to move into the Crater of Pontus and hire mercenaries that could be used for the reinforcing of their forces at the Red Keep, and he does this reluctantly knowing that Daemon is a very valuable warrior needed at Red Keep. Following sending away Daemon Blackfyre to the north he once again makes a decision he is not comfortable with when he leaves his brother Viserys in charge of the Red Keep and heads west towards High Forest where he will meet with the Elves of High Forest and attempt to enlist their assistence in the Battle of Red Keep.

Chapter 20

Deneyres Targaryan is the POV Character of this chapter and during this chapter she reigns over a very upset Kingdom of Orell of which is now being ruled over by the young daughter of Nedest Sordin in the form of Ophellia Sordin, and the entire kingdom watched as Deneyres sent her cousin Aegon to deal with the holdouts of Orell. Towards the end of the chapter she is commanded by her brother to send her dragon to the Red Keep as a massive force of Trolloc and Orcs are incoming and only with her dragon joining them do they have any hope. Without her dragon she is forced to rely upon the Sordins even more of which leads to her giving them more power as the young girl she had thought weak strikes a tough bargain with her.
